Carving Whittlestein | A Frankenstein-Inspired Basswood Whittling

Meet Whittlestein

πŸ‘‹πŸ’š β€” a quirky little Frankenstein-inspired carving made entirely from basswood with nothing but a knife in hand. This project was a mix of spooky and silly, and it reminded me why I love whittling: you can start with a plain block of wood and, with a bit of patience, reveal a character that feels alive.

Starting with a Block of Basswood

Like most of my carvings, Whittlestein began as a simple, square block of basswood. It’s my favorite material for knife carving because it’s soft enough to cut smoothly but still holds detail really well.

With my whittling knife, I roughed out the basic shape, slowly shaving away wood to hint at a head and shoulders. Each cut took me closer to that classic Frankenstein silhouette.

Bringing Whittlestein to Life

Once the outline was set, it was time for the fun part β€” details. I carved in the hairline, cut out big brow ridges, and shaped the mouth to give him that goofy, stitched-up monster vibe. Little details like the eyes and jagged hair gave Whittlestein his personality.

This is always the moment when the carving starts to feel alive β€” when the block of wood begins to look back at you.

Adding Color and Character

After the knife work was finished, Whittlestein needed a proper monster makeover. I painted his skin a bright green, darkened his hair, and highlighted the carved lines so his features really stood out. A final finish sealed the paint and gave him a nice, clean look.

The Final Reveal

Whittlestein is equal parts spooky and funny β€” a little wooden monster with a big personality. Projects like this remind me how carving can be playful, not just technical. He’s not perfect, and that’s what makes him special.

So, meet Whittlestein β€” born from basswood, shaped by knife, and now ready to join the carving family alongside Cousin Itt and the Penguin.
