Old Sea Captain Wood Carving

Detailing the Character

In this project I’m working on an Old Sea Captain wood carving, focusing on the stage where the character really begins to come alive. After shaping the basic form, this step is about refining the details that give the carving personality.

Facial features, clothing lines, and small adjustments to the proportions help transform a simple carving blank into a recognisable character figure. This project is inspired by the sea captain carving from Mike Shipley’s Whittling the Old Sea Captain, although I always like to add my own touches as the carving develops.

Watch the Carving Process

In the video below I go through the detailing stage and show how the character begins to take shape. This part of the process focuses on refining the face, beard, and clothing so the figure starts to feel more expressive.

Shaping the Face and Beard

One of the most important stages in character carving is shaping the facial features. The expression gives the figure its personality and helps bring the design together.

During this stage I worked on:

  • Defining the nose
  • Carving the beard and moustache
  • Adding lines around the face
  • Refining the shape of the hat and clothing

Small cuts and adjustments can make a big difference, especially when working with a small carving blank.

Tools and Materials

This carving was created using simple hand tools and a small block of wood.

Tools and materials used:

  • Whittling knife
  • Carving knife
  • Arbanet sanding mesh
  • Wood carving blank – 1.5″ × 1.5″ × 4″

Working with a blank this size makes it a great project for practising character carving techniques.

Choosing a Finish

The final step will be deciding how to finish the piece.

Two finishes I often consider are:

  • Natural oil finish
  • Wood stain

A natural oil keeps the look simple and highlights the grain, while stain can help emphasise carved details and deepen the shadows.
